MathCounts is a national math competition program for kids in grades 6 – 8. Middle school students at Holy Nativity Episcopal School tryout for our school team in September. After months of: during school, after school, and holiday practice, our “mathletes” head to competition. Bay District Schools hosts the first of two local contests for all middle schools in Bay County in January at Gulf Coast State College. HNES students love to go to this event because they see many of their friends from other schools. Being a part of this peer group is also a special opportunity to meet other gifted math students. Testing here includes the Sprint Round (no calculator allowed), the Target Round (calculator used), and the Team Round. The District event awards medals to the top ten students in each of the three grades.
There are also trophies for the top three teams in each grade. In February, the Florida Engineering Society (FES) hosts the “Gulf Regional” MathCounts Tri-county competition. Students in Bay, Gulf, and Washington Counties compete at The Advanced Technology Center of Gulf Coast State College. In addition to the Sprint Round, Target Round, and Team Round, top students at the FES event participate in the “gameshow rounds” of Ciphering and Countdown. Recognized as winners and trophy recipients are the top four individuals and the top three teams. Of these, the top four individuals and the top two teams advance to State in Orlando! Holy Nativity has had students invited to the State Competition in four different years in our short history of MathCounts participation.
